Native Americans, Gauls and Visigoths

Question occurred to me -- was there an analogy between the Germanic tribes the Romans encountered and the Indigenous tribes the European colonizers of the Americas encountered? (Related: were the Romans more like the Europeans, in that analogy, as bearers of civilization, or more like the indigenous, as having been invaded?)

Based on a brief sifting of wikipedia articles, it seems that the Goths and Visigoths were more advanced than native Americans, a question which is complicated, however, by a lack of international standards regarding the development of early culture. But maybe the Roman era was more a period in history in which the advantages of a highly organized civilization over a less organized one were not so clear cut.
